- The Castle of William the Conqueror
The castle of Caen is one of the largest castles in Europe. Founded around 1060 by William the Conqueror, it is the fortified complex of the old city center of Caen. Located between the Saint-Pierre church and the campus 1 of the University of Caen Normandy, its high walls offer a breathtaking view of the city center. - The Abbaye-aux-Hommes
Founded around 1060 by William the Conqueror, it offers a very beautiful architectural ensemble. During the Second World War, this abbey church was occupied by the Red Cross, which allowed it to escape the Allied bombing of Caen. - The Abbaye-aux-Dames
Founded in 1060 by Matilda of Flanders and William the Conqueror, it is classified as a historical monument and is the burrial site of Queen Mathilde. In June 1944, during the Allied landings and the battle of Caen, the abbey was relatively untouched by bombing. In 1983, the Abbey was bought by the Regional Council of Lower Normandy, which moved in in 1986 after a period of restoration. - The Caen Memorial Museum for Peace
The Mémorial de Caen is a museum and war memorial in Caen, commemorating World War II and the battle for Caen. More generally, the museum is dedicated to the history of the twentieth century, mainly focused on the fragility of peace. Its intention is “pay a tribute to the martyred city of the liberation” but also to tell “what was the terrible story of the 20th century in a spirit of reconciliation”.
